Last year Montenegro wowed Europe’s explorers with its new five-star hotels and dazzling coastline. Now there’s Europe’s first One&Only, a Nikki Beach, plus the Chedi and Aman. And what a coastline!
Except Montenegro is not only a typical summer beach destination for the family. Sure, there’s yachting, beaches, swimming and lazing in the sun. So far, visitors to this newly trending destination have only really explored the coast.
There’s a whole other experience waiting inland.
Rugged mountains hang high above the sea, so high they’re home to winter skiing. Rivers twist into caverns and caves. Do you know the world’s largest canyon? Surely you do, the Grand Canyon in Nevada, USA. How about Europe’s largest canyon? That’s Tara River Canyon in Montenegro.
Montenegro is where explorers can visit places undocumented by Instagram. Yet these adventures are in Europe, close to home and easy to experience. The following adventure activities are all possible as day excursions from any five-star Montenegro hotel.
Pure adventure, as you abseil down waterfalls and jump off cliffs. This is for the adrenalin lovers in Europe’s largest canyon.
Float serenely through nature and wonder why nobody knows about the Tara River Canyon. Rafting in Montenegro is a relaxed adventure for the whole family.

3. Birdwatching on Skadar Lake
200,000 birds live around this lake in summer, including the Dalmatian pelican and pygmy cormorant. Skadar is rarely explored by tourists.

Wander in the mountains and dine on local produce. Great for escaping the heat on a balmy summer day.
5. Ride Through a Vineyard
Montenegro makes surprisingly good wine, from some of the world’s oldest vines. Ride through on a horse and carriage then spend an afternoon tasting.
6. Sea Kayaking
Paddle down a coastline of endless surprises. Even at the height of summer you’ll find privacy here.
7. E-Biking Around Lustica Bay
Another easy adventure to combine with a morning on the beach. The cliffs are steep so ebikes are definitely the way to go.
8. Scenic Helicopter Flight
Montenegro’s roads are a little rough and rugged. Helicopters are a great way to get around and they are always scenic flights.
Paraglide in Montenegro and you have a view onto both mountains and sea.
10. Mountain Biking
Mountain bike trails can cater for every ability and age. Serious downhills are complemented by rolling valleys ideal for younger kids.
11. Quad Biking
Quad bikes explore the same trails and there’s so much space out here.
More Montenegro Adventures
Montenegro is a tiny country, only a sixth of the size of the Czech Republic. We love how much you can do on a holiday here. Don’t forget the beautiful town of Kotor. Or chartering a yacht to cruise the Adriatic.
If you only have a few days for Montenegro, here’s an itinerary we arranged for two of our clients. And if you have two weeks with your family in summer, you still won’t have time to do it all.
