Zakynthos

Greece

Dip your toes into the turquoise waters of Zakynthos, one of Greece’s most beautiful islands. Where the gentle Ionian sea laps gently against sugar-fine beaches and towering cliffs hide shipwrecks half-buried in the sand. Traditional monasteries share hilltops with ancient villages and lush vegetation hides one of Europe's finest luxury resorts. It’s easy to see why the island was once known to Venetian explorers as Fiore di Levante, the flower of the east.

Zakynthos airport has seasonal direct flights to many European hubs. Others will have to connect via Athens – around an hour's flight away. The public ferry is another option but it's quite a slow journey. Private yacht or private car are the best ways to navigate around the island.

Climate & seasons

July and August are the peak summer months, ideal for beach life but not great for exploring. Mid-May to June is Spring, and September to November is Autumn. These shoulder seasons are cooler, quieter and recommended if you want to explore the island itself. Winter is best not talked about.

Where to go

The all-villa Porto Zante is not only the best resort on the island but possibly one of the best in Europe. It’s an ideal base for exploring the island. This is best done by private yacht. The beaches of Gerakas, Keraki and world-famous Navagio are all highly worth sailing into – as are the neighbouring islands of Ithaca, Kefalonia and Marathonisi, also known as turtle island.

What to do

Relax in your own infinity pool at Porto Zante overlooking the shimmering turquoise sea. Hire a private yacht and set off on your very own island-hopping odyssey. Fish, swim, snorkel, dive or just lie on deck and let vitamin D do its magic. Head inland and explore ancient hilltop monasteries or wander the lanes of charming Zante town.
