A large island with a good choice of villas, there is something for everyone at Vakkaru Maldives. Snorkeling on the house reef is wonderful and the island’s best beach is near the Nautilus mansion.

Nestled inside a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, this good value island resort provides a quintessential mix of indulgence and relaxation. White sand merges with a turquoise lagoon and the vibrant underwater world is worth the journey alone - the snorkeling here is simply divine.Massive villas blend into their natural surroundings and with such impressive ocean surroundings, you shouldn’t need a private plunge pool. While other resorts may offer more amenities, it’s unlikely you’ll need to do anything in such a sublime setting.
Location
The island is on the Baa Atoll, one of the best places in the Indian Ocean for snorkeling and diving. Manta rays and whale sharks gather here every year. It’s a 35-minute seaplane flight from Male. An alternative option is to fly to Dharavandhoo Airport and transfer by speedboat.
Rooms
Fitting the iconic Maldivian aesthetic, the villas are a modern take on natural local design. And they’re pretty high tech on the inside as well. Some villas are tucked inside the island’s vegetation on the beach, others are over the water. All are very comfortable and their striking appeal is their sense of space.
Who is it for
This is a good all-round option for both couples and families, especially if you have some interest in the marine world. It’s a large island and there is a good choice of large family villas.
Facilities & activities
The spa is superb and there’s the snorkeling and diving you would expect from staying inside a biosphere reserve. Other resorts may have more extensive dining options.
