A decent option with a great location, some nice quirky design choices but nothing that will blow your mind in terms of service or amenities.
Stay at Grecotel Caramel
Nestled behind mature gardens and lush vegetation it's easy to feel cut off from the world here, despite the ancient town of Rethymnon being only a stone's skip away. With winding paths amongst scattered sculptures leading to the beach and back – there’s a definite stylish quirkiness to the design. Centred around a lagoon-style pool, this boutique resort looks especially magical at night when light from flame torches dances upon the water and reflects off the dazzling white architecture.
Location
Approximately an hour’s drive westward from Heraklion airport, the beachfront resort is conveniently located just off the main road. Rethymnon’s historic fortress and all its shops and restaurants are around four miles away.
Rooms
The resort has 69 sizeable suites, bungalows and a variety of villas. Be forewarned, the suites at the back of the property are closer to the road and do suffer from some sound leakage. If having a private pool is essential, then opt for the Caramel Villa, it’s the only on-site that will tick that particular box.
Who is it for
This boutique hotel will be a fine choice for both couples and families. It’s very well located for exploring the island. If however, you are very discerning when it comes to service levels you may prefer to look elsewhere.
Facilities & activities
The resort has all the amenities you would imagine from a top-end hotel such as a spa, saltwater pool, two restaurants and beautifully manicured gardens - just don’t expect too many surprises. Oh, and the beach itself is a bit pebbly.
