Barefoot luxury takes centrestage at this famous Maldives resort, home to a lot more than the world’s ultimate underwater suite and undersea dining. Great for all types of holidays, but not the most intimate or boutique option around.
Stay at Conrad Rangali
Looking out from your bed you admire the ocean. Ah, the Maldives. Turquoise bliss. Except with this suite you are under the water. Back on land it’s barefooted luxury all the way, as you wander sandy beaches and palm-studded pathways. Now cross a 500-metre footbridge to the other island and go explore. You have a spa treatment booked in an hour and later you’ll go searching for whale sharks and manta rays, possibly followed by some live music. And tomorrow? With such superb villas and things to do, tomorrow is however you want it to be.
Location
Home to an abundance of dive sites and safe shark encounters, the South Ari Atoll is a 30-minute seaplane flight away from Male. Note that if your international flight lands after 4pm you’ll need a 30-minute domestic flight to Maamigili then a 20-minute speedboat transfer. The resort consists of two islands connected by a long footbridge, one tailored to couples, the other for families.
Rooms
Rangali’s underwater suite is the ultimate place to stay on any island, anywhere. The bedroom is open to the fish and you go up to the ground floor area that has all the high-end space and amenities expected. Just note there’s only one of these suites and it’s often booked far in advance. In general, all the villas are very high quality for such a large resort, featuring thatched roofs and a private place to cool off in the water (some have pools, others sunken baths or small whirlpools). Some are over the water, others are beachfront with private gardens. A welcome recent upgrade means there are now better multi-room villas for families.
Who is it for
A solid choice for almost everyone, either couples on the adults-only island or families making use of the kid’s club. Except for the undersea villa, this isn’t the most exclusive place to stay. And if you’re seeking something intimate and boutique look elsewhere. However, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island delivers a good standard of luxury, in terms of overall quality and unique features.
Facilities & activities
The advantage of two islands is using two sets of amenities. So two spas, a watersports centre, tennis courts, and 12 restaurants. These include Ithaa, a fine-dining venue five metres below the water. The kid’s club is complementary and takes children aged between three and 12.
