Hotel Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino

A doyenne of the Italian Riveria’s luxury hotel scene the Belmond Hotel Splendido has been delivering exceptional service in a sumptuous setting for over a century and it doesn’t look like stopping – or disappointing – any day soon.

Stay at Splendido

Luxuriate in dreamy satisfaction at the pool’s edge, while the merry dance of yachts – both mega and regular – plays out in the impossibly picturesque harbour of Portofino hundreds of feet below. For over a century now privacy-conscious stars, sun-hunting aristocracy and the dolce vita set have been looking at this view and feeling their cares melt away. There is something so intensely satisfying about having your expectations met and surpassed. At the Belmond Splendido – one of the grand old dames of the Italian Riviera – they’ve been achieving this feat for longer than most of us have been alive. A first-time stay here is often the start of a long and beautiful relationship.

Location

The main hotel is housed in a former 16th Century monastery, high on the hillside above the waters of the Golfo di Tigullio. Just a five-minute stroll downhill to the postcard-perfect village of Portofino and thankfully a quick shuttle ride back up. The hotel’s sister establishment, the Belmond Splendido Mare is based down the water’s edge.

Rooms

70 rooms and suites, the majority of which are sea-facing. Double-check as you don’t want to miss out on the shimmering water vista. Skip the rather small standard rooms and opt for something a little grander instead, like the suites with wrap-around terraces.

Who is it for

With such a romantic setting it will be couples who get the most from a stay here. Families are of course welcome and very well catered for, but with no beach in sight, small kids may be a little bored in such exclusive and grown-up environs.

Facilities & activities

Exceptional service delivered by experienced staff, even for guests’ dogs who receive special monogrammed bathrobes. A stunningly photogenic salt-water infinity pool, a fabulous spa, two restaurants, a kids club and beautiful terraced gardens. Private tours into the hilly Ligurian hinterland to visit olive oil, wine and cheese producers and sunset champagne cruises on the hotel’s own 36ft boat.
