Looking beyond the summer to easy and fun family destinations this autumn: Barcelona, Austria, Dolomites, Amsterdam, Puglia, Copenhagen, Paris.
Barcelona
Do your children like football? Barcelona will play Real Madrid in El Classico on October 29th.
Barcelona is always a good destination for families, mostly thanks to the sheer variety of things to do for all ages. Plus the awesome food of course! And remember, it’s a city on the beach and the weather usually remains warm and sunny throughout autumn.
You can have a beach, city and football trip in one.
Try Hotel Arts Barcelona, the best luxury hotel on the beach for families, with a spa on the 43rd floor and superb old-school service.
Italian Dolomites
Easily drivable from Prague and most of Central Europe, the Italian Dolomites can be different holidays depending on your mood.
Come for a long weekend. Perhaps leaving your children at home if you want to enjoy a spa break at Forestis Dolomites or Alpen Tesitin.
Bring younger children and enjoy a quiet week in nature, like at Hotel Chalet Mirabell, which has an enormous spa and many heated pools. Or at the very private San Luis Lodge on the lakeside. Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti is a very good spa hotel that’s also very good for kids.
Amsterdam
This delightful city is undergoing transformation, far away from its famous image of red lights. Amsterdam is quickly becomes a luxury destination for discerning travellers, supported by new properties (Rosewood Amsterdam will open next year).
Think of private boat journeys along the canals, through Amsterdam’s enchanting old town
Relaxed afternoons in the parks. Museums for all ages, for when the weather isn’t ideal. Cycling in the surrounding countryside, to windmills and small villages.
Amsterdam is also really convenient for a weekend getaway, as the city centre and best hotels are only 20- – 30-minute transfer from Schiphol International Airport.
Puglia
Direct flights between Prague and Bari, Puglia, continue through autumn and into the winter. Italy’s southeastern corner stays warm and sunny until November, making it a great place to enjoy late-summer sun.
Puglia is Italy’s upcoming destination and there are some amazing new five-star properties, with good options for all types of visitor. Borgo Egnazia remains our personal favourite and private villas are another option for families.
So this could be a relaxed resort holiday on the coast, during the half-term holidays. Or you can rent a car and explore more of the region. Puglia is an authentic and mostly undeveloped version of Italy, a dream if you want to explore.
Copenhagen
Denmark’s charming capital is one of the friendliest places for adventures with children. It’s small, mostly pedestrianised, and easy to get around, even with a baby stroller. Yes there are cobbles, but they’re a lot easier to navigate than ancient cities like Rome.
Children are very much welcomed everywhere in Denmark, from cafes to museums to restaurants. This friendly atmosphere goes a long way to creating a relaxed holiday.
There are beaches nearby, plus Legoland for a day trip. Don’t miss Tivoli Gardens with its large amusement park or the excellent Blue Planet aquarium. There’s also The Children’s Museum, inside the National Museum, a dedicated space for four to ten-year olds. Plus these unique experiences to continue your adventure in Denmark.
Austria
Das Edelweiss is a lovely spa hotel with great facilities for children, less than six hours by car from Prague. It’s one of the best holidays you can easily drive to from Central Europe. The hotel just reopened after a large-scale renovation. CEO Peter Hettegger explained”
We have new suites, a completely redesigned family area, and generous expansion of our children’s and youth area. (Peter Hettegger)
Combine Das Edelweiss with a stop in Salzburg, another charming family destination. The city is perfectly sized for an interesting layover, the surroundings are sublime, and the Red Bull Museum is an experience worth driving for.
Paris
Eurodisney. The City of Lights. All the amazing hotels, like the recently opened Cheval Blanc Paris and Bulgari Paris.
Two old-time favourite in Paris’s Golden Triangle might be your best option as family, The Peninsula Paris and Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris
Paris is a fail safe option. France may be in the news for the wrong reasons right now, but such issues don’t linger and remember, Paris will host the 2024 Olympics.
Even if you’ve been many times before, Paris always has the ability to inspire, surprise and charm. There’s simply so much to explore and everyone has an opportunity to do something they want.
