This sprawling Ischia resort is all about holiday relaxation for couples. Verdant gardens, a small beach, a dozen swimming pools, and a calm place to rest on a sultry Italian island. It’s not the most fashionable of Ischia resorts, but the views are amazing.
Stay at San Montano Resort & Spa
Welcome to swimming pool paradise on the sunny Italian island of Ischia. Hot and cold, indoor and outdoor, infinity pools and private hot tubs, thermal water and salt water, all above a small sandy beach. This is the immediate highlight of San Montano Resort & Spa, a hilltop resort set in Mediterranean gardens. It’s a tranquil resort with an adult vibe, for a relaxing resort holiday on an interesting island.
Location
San Montano is built upon the site of an ancient Greek acropolis, at perhaps the ultimate Ischia location. It tops Monte Vico and the views are splendid, although it’s a steep, almost one-kilometre walk down to the beach. Ischia port is about 15 minutes away.
Rooms
The airy rooms are made in a classic Mediterranean holiday style, with lots of white and light blue, plus some colourful tiles. Some may find the style a little old fashioned. Entry-level rooms are very compact, but there are pool suites, villas and apartments with much more space. Many of these have private pool access.
Who is it for
There’s a very grown-up atmosphere and few amenities for children, even if they are welcome. Plus, with all the different swimming pools it’s not a place for a wandering toddler. The beach can be busy in summer, so it’s more suited to people preferring pool time over sea time.
Facilities & activities
With a dozen different swimming pools there’s usually a new place for a quick dip. Some use Ischia’s famous thermal waters, others are infinity pools overlooking the Gulf of Naples. Mud-based treatments are popular in the resort spa, which is spacious and well appointed. There are three restaurants and the service is efficient, rather than overly personal.
