Our overall assessment is that this is a fine hotel, even if it’s not the very best. Because it’s such a large establishment the service, though fine, is not as personal as in smaller places, so we wouldn’t rate it a 10/10. On the other hand, the price is friendlier than at some other St Moritz properties. Plus, there are three big reasons why this can be a great hotel for you - the chalets, ski-in ski-out opportunities and the spa.
Stay at Kempinski St. Moritz
Ski out from your chalet suite, onto quiet and snowy slopes. Ski back in and relax, in the town’s largest spa, the cryotherapy chamber an antidote to your tired legs. Now dine, in two-Michelin-star Ca’ d’oro, before settling once more into the space and grandeur of your chalet suite. Largest and oldest of hotels in St Moritz, Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski sits on a calm slope above the town and the lake. You may be frustrated by the mismatch between the 19-century exterior and the contemporary interior — but if your focus is on skiing and having a variety of spa treatments, you won’t be disappointed. We love the alpine suites, chalet-like residences that afford a lot more space than other top St Moritz hotels.
Location
This is a genuine ski-in ski-out property, which is rare for St Moritz. It’s ideal for nature and snowsports, less so if you want to be in the heart of the town’s buzz. The Grand Hotel des Bains is a 20-minute walk, and a 5-minute drive, from the centre of St. Moritz. There’s a regular shuttle service into town.
Rooms
Displaying a neutral contemporary design, rooms are one level below those at Badrutt’s Palace. As it is with many Kempinski hotels, the design is not off-putting — but neither is it particularly stunning. Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski shines for its alpine suites. These vast chalet-style residences are in a separate area of the hotel and are a step above the quality you may perceive from the Kempinski brand.
Who is it for
This is a great hotel for families — it has amenities such as a kids’ club and ski school, and children’s menus. Adults will like it too, as long as they are not expecting a cozy boutique stay. But whether family or couple, this hotel is best when you take a chalet.
Facilities & activities
Direct access to ski slopes, a ski school, and a tennis and squash centre make this a good choice for an active holiday. St. Moritz’s biggest spa is a major draw, with new facilities like a collagen booster solarium plus a variety of pools, saunas and good quality amenities. Definitely dine at Ca d’oro, the hotel’s flagship two-Michelin-star restaurant.
