Top class accommodation, a beautiful location, and most importantly, great golf courses. These are not your average 18 holes, they’re a holiday hole in one from the Caribbean to Italy and Spain. Here are our top picks for a golf holiday this summer and autumn.
Borgo Egnazia, Puglia, Italy
Puglia is Italy’s trendy new destination, where olive groves and rolling hills meet the azure of the Adriatic Sea. It’s been a secret of golfers for a long time, thanks to the prestigious San Domenico links course. These 18 holes reflect the wonder of Puglia and are just a short cart ride from Borgo Egnazia, the region’s best five-star hotel.
Finca Cortesin Hotel Golf & Spa, Andalucia, Spain
Andalucia’s status as a leading European golf destination is no secret. Finca Cortesin will host the 2023 Solheim Cup and has hosted the World Match Play Championship three times. The hotel, golf course and spa are all magnificent, simply the best in Andalusia. There are over a dozen other championship courses nearby, notably at La Zagaleta.
Penha Longa, Portugal
The 27 holes at Penha Longa form two contrasting 18-hole challenges. Host to the Portuguese Open these are courses that reward risk takers, demanding bold drives and courageous approaches. A holiday here is more than golf. The highlights of Sintra are next door and Lisbon is only 30 minutes away.
The Romanos, Costa Navarino – Greece
Greece is emerging as a prime golf destination because they’re finally improved the courses. Costa Navarino is the only Greek destination to consider, with four 18-hole courses that host various international tournaments. Think teeing off alongside the river and the sea, then fairways twisting through contrasting landscapes. The Romanos is the best place to stay and it’s on the fairway.
Argentario Golf Resort, Tuscany
Argentario Golf Resort is both the Tuscany you know and one you’d never expect. Driving between stands of cork and oak trees. Plunging hills with tightly cut fairways. A golf resort set on an island, connected to mainland Tuscany by three causeways and two lagoons. A more spectacular setting you’ll struggle to find, anywhere.
Maxx Royal Belek Golf Resort, Antalya, Turkey
Turkey is also emerging as a golf destination and Maxx Royal Belek Golf Resort is the only place we recommend. The course is good but it can’t match Spain, Portugal or Italy. However, the lively resort is great for families and we recommend it when you seek a varied family holiday with time on and off the greens.
Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort, French Riviera
Like Maxx Royal Belek, Terre Blanche is in the category of quiet oasis, lots of activities, fun for the whole family and good golf. The Chateau course is a magnificent 18 holes, but we’d recommend warming up on nearby Taulane the day before. Terre Blanche has a new-world golf vibe that oozes privilege, close to Cannes.
Want a Golf Holiday?
Rosewood Mayakoba, Riviera Maya – Mexico
Yes, Mexico has great golf. There’s a PGA Championship course nestled between tropical jungle, freshwater canals, Caribbean seafront and dense mangroves. It’s called El Camaleon in Mayakoba, closed October 28th to November 7th for the PGA Tour Tournament. When you visit take both a morning and twilight tee time during summer. Rosewood Mayakoba is the best place to stay at this new destination, Mayakoba.
Four Seasons Papagayo – Costa Rica
For dramatic oceanfront golf we love Amanera in the Dominican Republic, but it’s best from November to April. During summer we receommend the Arnold Palmer-designed course at Four Seasons Papagayo in Costa Rica, where you tee off to the chatter of monkeys and approach greens on ocean cliffs.
