Reimagined Belmond Maroma, Mexico, Is About to Open

Mexico is quickly emerging as one of the world’s leading luxury beach destinations, with a string of outstanding new resorts on both the Caribbean and Pacific coastlines.

Maroma, a Belmond Hotel, is one of these. It’s been completely reimagined and beautifully renovated, ready to reopen on August 3 2023. We take a sneak peak.

The Beating Heart of the Riviera Maya

An aerial view of the original Maroma property, before its renovation.

Green jungle meets the wide-open Caribbean sea in the Riviera Maya. Maroma is perched in between, hidden by the trees and opening onto a very long and quiet beach.

It’s a very secluded hideaway, in a land where Mayan and Mexican culture provides an authentic experience.

This mixing of cultures is realised in the resort’s new design, by Tara Bernerd, who aligned the buildings to the sacred geometry of Mayan masons. Hundreds of local artisans were used throughout the renovation.

This is a reimagined beach resort that reflects the Riviera Maya’s allure: mysterious, rejuvenating, dominated by nature and inspired by local traditions.

Experiences on Offer at Maroma, a Belmond Hotel

Tets Kato from Belmond in Mexico told us about some of the new experiences on offer all of which can be personalised by a Experience Curator.

Like an early morning bicycle tour through the jungle, followed by an alfresco breakfast. Every day, at dusk, 1000 candles are lit throughout the hotel and a candle making workshop is on offer to guests.

There’s a Mayan stargazing experience, paired with biodynamic wines, using the nighttime sky to decode the mysteries of Mayan life. Mexican wine tasting, agave journeys, farm to table and vegan cooking classes, plus a cacao healing ritual are all on the experience menu.

The new Guerlain Spa

This is also where you’ll also find one of 2023’s best new spas, Maroma Spa by Guerlain, where the treatment menu has many ancient Mayan healing rituals.

It’s Always Been About Location on the Riviera Maya

People often mistake this part of Mexico with Cancun. Cancun is a large and overcrowded resort city in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Riviera Maya is the region south of Cancun, almost 200 kilometres of beautiful Caribbean coastline and jungle.

Resort towns have emerged on parts of this coastline, like Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Luxury resort complexes have been built too, such as Mayakoba, where we most prefer Rosewood Mayakoba.

The Maroma beach

Large sections of this coast remain hidden away. Maroma is one of these and the location is perfect. It’s close enough to access the region’s many highlights, including Mayan ruins, golf courses, cenotes and activities on the sea. Yet also secluded enough to provide genuine exclusivity.

Accommodation and Facilities at Maroma, A Belmond Hotel

One of the new suites

In keeping with recent trends, the majority of the 72 accommodations are now suites, with just a small handful of entry-level rooms.

We particularly like the look of the new oceanfront suites. Some feature private plunge pools and all have impressive vistas.

There are one and two-bedroom suites, plus a four-bedroom Villa Maroma for larger families.

There are two restaurants, one focused on eclectic Mexican gastronomy, the second more international with an open grill and plenty of fresh seafood.
