Wrap yourself in the marvels of multifaceted Austria, for this is a nation of many delights. There is something to be enjoyed with each new season.
Explore Austria
Enchanting inland cities seep history and culture. Mountainous landscapes rise with majestic snowy peaks. Nature lovers, thrill seekers and gourmet diners will all be well-entertained. The ambience is rich in this versatile destination. To truly assess its depth, you’ll have to see for yourself.
Getting here and around
Austria’s convenient central position within Europe makes it easily accessible by ground, either through car or train transport. Flyers typically land in Vienna, Salzburg or Innsbruck - the gateway to the Austrian Alps. Of the three, Vienna Airport is busiest. In terms of getting around, private or chauffeured cars offer the best way to explore the country. Helicopter transfers can save time but are limited on landing spots, especially in the Alps.
Climate & seasons
As a ski hotspot, winter is unsurprisingly best for snowy experiences in the Alps. However, Vienna is also worth visiting in December for the magic of the Christmas markets. January and February is when the ball season in the capital reaches its peak. Late spring to early fall is pleasant for general city sightseeing, as well as non-snow outdoor activities in the Alps.
Where to go
The two main hubs most visitors flock to are Vienna and the Alps. However, as the birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg comes with its own unique charm. Lesser known but equally picturesque places are Hallstatt, Zell am See, Bad Gastein, Alpbach and the scenic 18-mile Wachau Valley. As the biggest city in the Alps, Innsbruck is incredibly quaint. Meanwhile, the best ski spots include Kitzbühel, Kirchberg in Tirol, Kaprun, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and Ski Arlberg, the last of which is the largest interconnected ski area in Austria.
What to do
If you’re after a snowy break, you cannot go wrong with Austria. From skiing to snowboarding, the setting is most ideal for winter sports. That being said, there is still plenty to do outside of the typical Alps experience. Hike or bike among nature and enjoy the beauty of the Alpine lakes. Dig into traditional Austrian cuisine - the Wiener Schnitzel and Sacher Torte are just two must-tries. Roam through the sights of Vienna, visit the opera or attend a ball. Soak up the ambience of historic Salzburg. Motorheads can enjoy supercar drives down Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Hedonists have the luxury of Alpine hotel spas.
