The Principal Madrid Hotel

A downside is that there’s only one elevator, so you have to wait when going up and down — or else take the stairs. Apart from that, if you are not planning to spend your days inside your hotel and you want the most central location on Gran Vía, this is a fine choice indeed. Sure, the Four Seasons and Mandarin hotels are grander — but they are also more expensive.

Stay at The Principal

A modern hotel in a 17th-century palatial building, The Principal is a Madrid classic — and not only for guests. In summer evenings, madrileños sit in the rooftop bar to sip cocktails and chatter in the lively Spanish way, while sunset hangs over the city. Join them for an exclusive yet authentic Madrid experience. But Madrid is not a city where you want to stay long at your hotel. There’s plenty to discover, so The Principal’s biggest advantage is its location — you can just walk to most of the city’s landmarks.

Location

The Principal is a 20-minute drive to Barajas Airport. It’s in the most central area of the city, and museums, parks and monuments are almost all within walking distance.

Rooms

The 76 rooms and suites are nothing spectacular, but are perfectly fine. Decor is in an unobtrusive contemporary style with an occasional vintage touch. The windows are soundproof, so despite the heavy traffic in the avenues around, you will sleep well.

Who is it for

The atmosphere of elegance and exclusivity is rather on the adult side, but families are welcome. You can have interconnecting rooms if you like.

Facilities & activities

You will love the rooftop bar, and if you are really into drinks, you can do a cocktail workshop at the hotel. The Principal has no spa, but there’s a wellness suite offering different treatments, a small fitness room, and complimentary yoga classes. The Ático restaurant is run by Michelin-starred chef Ramon Freixa.
