There’s no better feeling than being in the heart of the bustling action but the moment the door closes behind you are transported to another world. One of calm, beautiful design, and superb personalised service. This is the joy of a city centre luxury hotel and it’s something Barcelona’s Mandarin Oriental has got just right. The hustle of Las Rambla, the jostle of the Gothic Quarter, the delight of the chic stores on Passeig de Gràcia and the marvel of Gaudi’s mind come to life in the undulating facades of his Modernist creations, all of this is minutes away but to be honest who cares? You’ve got mimosa, a rooftop pool and sunset is approaching. Everything else can wait until tomorrow.

Location

Housed in a former bank in the renowned upscale shopping street of Passeig de Gràcia, in the very heart of Barcelona’s swanky Eixample neighbourhood. Las Ramblas and the Old Town are just a very pleasant 5-minute stroll away, but the beach is too far to walk comfortably, best to hail a ride instead.

Rooms

92 rooms with private balconies and 28 very generously sized suites all decorated with Mandarin Oriental’s trademark Asia-inspired touches. The two-bedroom family rooms are in our opinion the best luxury family rooms in the city.

Who is it for

Anyone who wants to be pampered and spoiled but doesn’t want to stray far from the action. A great city-centre option, and a superb option for families. Beach fans may wish to have a look at the Hotel Arts or The W.

Facilities & activities

Superb. Like most Mandarian Oriental properties the hotel boasts a top-notch spa, plus a very modern gym. In terms of eating and drinking, there’s the Bankers Bar, the Mimosa Garden bar and the tremendous rooftop bar, the Terrart, which boasts a very photogenic pool. Last but far from least is the mouthwatering MOments helmed by triple-starred chef Carme Ruscalleda.
