Bairro Alto Hotel

A fine choice for anyone looking for old school Portuguese charm and fantastic food right in the heart of this vibrant city.

Stay at Bairro Alto

The Bairro Alto hotel is Portuguese charm at its best thanks to a recent 3 year renovation by renowned architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. You feel the history of the hotel everywhere, from the imposing Pombal-era building exterior to the delightful interiors that come courtesy of Atelier Bastir who decorated the original hotel many moons ago.Sip wine on the expansive roof terrace overlooking the River Tagus. Order a signature cocktail at the suburb 18.68 cocktail bar. Or do what you should do when in the Bairro Alto neighborhood and use the hotel as your base to explore the city, which unfolds right outside the front door.Because location is everything.

Location

If you want central, you’ve got it. The Bairro Alto hotel is set - unsurprisingly - in the vibrant Bairro Alto district of Lisbon on the pretty square of Praca de Camoes, filled with cafes, bars, and restaurants. This neighborhood is the lifeblood of Lisbon and is very accessible to other famous districts such as Chiado, Alfama and Principe Real.

Rooms

18th century rooms with modern touches and no two are the same. Some of the original rooms have kept their character whereas the newer suites are more striking. Views from the front are onto that beautiful square from large windows that flood the rooms with light. Interiors are Portuguese focused, with local brands and artists making up much of the decor.

Who is it for

Children are welcome here but the vibe is more suited to adults who want a centrally located, Portuguese brand focused hotel.

Facilities & activities

The star of this hotel’s show is its restaurant, overseen by chef Nuno Mendes who has returned to Lisbon to deliver stellar classic Portuguese dishes with a modern twist. There is also a neat little wellness centre with state of the art gym, sauna and treatment rooms (but no pool).
