Six Senses Douro Valley

The Six Senses brand always masterfully blends sustainability with luxury and this hotel is no exception. Excellent service, elegant rooms and can’t-be-beaten views. But don’t expect a party every night; this is a decidedly chilled out, peaceful kind of place.

Stay at Six Senses Douro Valley

As you accept your welcome glass of Port, you step onto the terrace to be greeted with a view like no other in Portugal. Impossibly steep vineyards surround you, climbing up the deep Douro Valley gorge. The sun glints on the river below. You wander down to one of the hotel’s viewpoints to take it all in - the Douro Valley, unchanged for generations. Welcome to the Six Senses Douro Valley hotel, a 19th century quinta and tranquil hideaway filled with forest paths, secret tunnels and gardens, just waiting to be explored - if you can tear yourself away from the hotel itself, that is.

Location

The Six Senses hotel is in a converted quinta - or wine estate, set deep into the twisting Douro Valley, around an hour and a half from Porto. Surrounded by eight hectares (19 acres) of terraced vineyards and private gardens, nature is never far away, and neither are incredible views.

Rooms

The best rooms come with a beautiful view and balcony (although this is not a given for all 60 rooms, ask us for which one is best for you). Floor to ceiling windows come as standard, as do top-notch beds to facilitate deep, restorative sleep. The room nicely blends traditional Portuguese design with modern touches like tablet controlled lights and room service.

Who is it for

If eco-friendly wellness, wine and gastronomy in a tranquil and sustainable setting is your thing, this is the hotel for you. But if you’re looking for easy access to the bright lights of a bustling city, look elsewhere.

Facilities & activities

The stars of the show are the farm-to-table restaurants, of which there are a number dotted in the estate. Much of the food is grown organically on site, with a focus on seasonal produce. The wine, of course, is stellar and wide reaching. Then there’s the spa with 10 treatment rooms, a heated indoor pool and a state of the art gym. Treatments are personalised and focused on nature, using everything from grapes to local herbs.
