Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Multi-award winning for its conservation and sustainability programs, Grootbos will immerse you in a nature not found anywhere else in the world. It’s not classic safari, it’s something rare and completely different, a mix of coastal retreat and exploration.

Stay at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

The ocean stirs. A humpback whale breaches. It’s so close you can see it from land, where the ancient forest meets the ocean. Add the whale to the dolphins, seals and penguins you’ve encountered. And tomorrow you will be diving with great white sharks. In between marine life you’re walking flowering fynbos fields and exploring a landscape not found anywhere else in the world. Such adventure is matched by modern living. A spacious suite with a pool overlooking the ocean, a place to unwind in silence on the edge of the world, at one of the most eco conscious of our planet’s ultimate lodges.

Location

A private reserve where forest meets fynbos and savannah meets the ocean. Grootbos is about 2 and a half hours by road from Cape Town, a little less from the Cape Winelands. Whales migrate past from June to November and there are sharks galore, plus plenty of interesting animals on land, but it’s not a classic safari destination with lions and elephants.

Rooms

Of the different accommodation we most prefer the private villas, with four and six bedrooms respectively. They are hyper-modern, with vast indoor and outdoor living areas, private pool, guide, butler and chef. Garden Lodge is older and larger than Forest Lodge. We prefer the latter, especially the suites with private pools and living rooms with open fires.

Who is it for

This unique lodge is the perfect place when you want some downtime on a longer South African holiday. Don’t come here for your only safari experience, as you’ll be disappointed by the lack of big land animals. Think of Grootbos as a mix between ocean beach holiday, nature immersion, modern living and tranquillity. Most South Africa holidays are about adventure and when you need some quiet days in a busy itinerary, Grootbos will provide them, along with its unique Cape nature.

Facilities & activities

You’ll have a ranger to plan and arrange your activities, with your stay inclusive of nature hikes, drives and horseback rides. This is the best place to stay for whale watching and shark cage diving, then there are fat bike tours on the sand dunes and exploring the region’s wine. The spa is pretty good and the gastronomy is exceptional.
