Spectacular views, hyper exclusivity, opulent accommodation and good but not the best, game viewing. Richard Branson’s game reserve and two lodges offer a level of luxury rarely experienced on safari, making this a prime choice if you demand comfort first, animals later. Surprisingly great value as well.

Stay at Ulusaba

On and on the vistas roll. Of giant boulders, verdant grasslands and animals on the move. Admire the scenery from your private plunge pool, as your kids go to the Cub’s Club. Luxuriate in your suite, so opulent and well appointed for the wilderness. Now go explore, not the safari, but one of the best spas of any safari lodge in Africa. Here at Ulusaba the animals are just one attraction. Your accommodation is another. Here you experience how Richard Branson does safari, for this is his safari lodge and it’s one of the best appointed in Africa.

Location

The Sabi Sands area is known for animals not vistas. Ulusaba is an exception, especially Rock Lodge, perched on an escarpment 250 metres above the plains. The views are so endless you can see a nearby town, so it’s not purely wilderness. This private game reserve is in the far west of the Sabi Sands area, quite a distance from Kruger National Park. This isn’t a premier location for game viewing, however, game drives will take you east into better areas of the Sabi Sands.

Rooms

Rock Lodge makes you feel like you’re on top of the world. Some suites feature private plunge pools, including the Master Suite, which is spread over three levels and amazing for honeymooners. Safari Lodge is built into a forest canopy, above a dry riverbed. Most rooms have private pools and there’s a Treehouse Suite accessed by swing bridges. Both lodges deliver top-level luxury, from the furnishings and spaciousness to dozens of tiny details.

Who is it for

Is your idea of a safari all about having an opulent lodge? Going out to see some animals, then coming back to the spa? Then Ulusaba is for you. It’s exclusive and highly luxurious, but not the premier choice if you prefer an active safari or the very best game viewing. Some of the suites are wonderful for couples while the Cub’s Club makes Rock Lodge equally good for families.

Facilities & activities

Game drives, safari walks, trips to the Drakensberg Escarpment and exploring the Sabi Sands. But you’re equally likely to be using the spa and drinking cocktails by the pool.
