Sanctuary Kusini Tanzania

The safari place to be from January to March, when a million wildebeest have their calves on the surrounding grasslands. Remote, private, simple and spacious. And surrounded by the greatest wildlife show there is.

Stay at Sanctuary Kusini Tanzania

From the bed you hear them. Wildebeest. A drumbeat of hooves. The soft sound of nearby grazing. They’re everywhere. And you can sense their predators are nearby too. Zebra and buffalo herds dapple the horizon and occasionally there’s an elephant as well. So settle into the perfect hideaway for casual game viewing, where the safari quite literally comes to you. From January to March close to 2 million animals are in this southern part of the Serengeti, around the camp. You have the ultimate location and guides who know this land like no other, so expect a thrill a minute when the game drive starts.

Location

Sanctuary Kusini is the only permanent camp in the southern Serengeti, hidden away among iconic rocky outcrops (kopjes). These mineral-rich grasslands are where wildebeest have their calves before starting their migration. So it’s a haven for predators in search of easy meals and heaven for spectacular safari sightings, as the treeless landscape provides few places to hide. You can come overland from Ngorongoro Crater, or take a scheduled or private safari flight to the nearby South Serengeti airstrip.

Rooms

The 12 open-plan en-suite tents are spacious and comfortable, but don’t have the luxuries of other safari camps, like swimming pools and open-air bathtubs. They are simple and comfortable and you really don’t need fancy extras with a location like this. Sanctuary Kusini is where wildlife takes centrestage, not your camp.

Who is it for

For action-packed safari this is the best camp in East Africa between January and March. For the rest of the year you’ll probably want to follow the migration north and stay elsewhere. Children aged over six are welcomed and must share with their parents.

Facilities & activities

Game drives are magnificent here and the guiding is top notch, especially for witnessing the region’s abundance of predators. Short game walks are often possible, depending on sightings of nearby cats. Safari and wildlife are the focus, so don’t expect too much in terms of extra amenities.
