Cappadocia has transformed from hidden gem to Instagrammable icon in a few years, yet it's easy to underestimate the large size and complexity of this beautiful region. The famous hot air balloon ride is just the start of your experience.
Explore Cappadocia
Shake the sleep from your eyes and replace it with wonder as you gently rise in the pre-dawn light. Marvel as your hot air balloon is gracefully joined by a colourful sea of others rising together in a performance of silent eloquence. In front, the rising Anatolian sun, all around the mysterious wind-sculpted fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, a geological oddity without comparison. After you’ve witnessed the weirdness from above, descend into the subterranean luxury of one of the region’s high-end cave hotels.
Getting here and around
The region has two airports, Nevşehir Kapadokya and Kayseri Erkilet. Both are a short 75minute flight from Istanbul. Of the two Nevşehir is the closest to Goreme or Uçhisar. Getting around Cappadocia is easy, most guests find a chauffeur-driven car to be most convenient.
Climate & seasons
The climate is best between May and October, but don’t be surprised by a significant temperature drop between day and night. July and August are peak months in terms of crowds and prices. Winter in Central Turkey is cold and windy which lowers visitor numbers and hotel rates but also reduces the chances of hot air balloons being able to operate. Those lucky enough to experience snow will find the fantastical scenery covered in an added layer of magic.
Where to go
Cappadocia is a fascinating region of otherworldly beauty with several towns and villages worth your time. The most popular are Goreme or Uçhisar. Both share the region's fairytale scenery of crumbling cave dwellings, wind-sculpted pillars and precariously balanced boulders. Your visit isn’t restricted to just exploring the scenery – book a stay in one of the luxury cave hotels such as the Argos or Museum Hotel – and you can experience something unique to Cappadocia alone.
What to do
No visit to Cappadocia is complete without a sunrise hot air balloon experience. The quirky mystery of the scenery is compounded in the early light. Hiking and horseback riding are an ever-popular way to get out into nature and up close to the landscape. Private fully customizable “hidden” valley experiences such as romantic dinners or massages are highly recommended. As is unlocking the geological and historical secrets of the Goreme Open Air museum and Pasabag valley with an experienced local guide.
