A fine (and only) choice in Ulaanbaatar. Worth it for a day or two either side of your flight, but this is more of a place to stop off on your way to bigger and better Mongolian adventures.
Stay at Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar
The whole of Ulaanbaatar is spread at your feet at the Shangri-La, which is housed in an impressive glass modern skyscraper that towers over the city skyline. Gaze at the spectacular views of the city, with mountains and forests winking in the distance, cocktail in hand. This is the best Ulaanbaatar has to offer and is regarded as the first and only luxury hotel in Mongolia. Its location also makes it the best place to stay when you’re flying in and out of Ulaanbaatar.
Location
The Shangri-La boasts a great location in the heart of the city, close to the Choijin Lama Temple Museum and National Amusement Park. All of the city’s major sites are close by including Great Chinggis Khan Square and Government Square. The airport is around a 30 minute drive.
Rooms
Although the rooms may not be as spectacular as some other 5 star establishments, the views make up for it somewhat, and the rooms are the largest in the city. We’d recommend opting for Horizon Club Access in either the Deluxe rooms or Executive suite thanks to the perks (express check in and out, breakfast, cocktails, evening canapes and all day beverage service).
Who is it for
There is no particular focus on couples, families or business travelers here - as this is the only luxury choice in Ulaanbaatar, it’s a fine choice for everyone passing through the city.
Facilities & activities
The focus here is on the restaurants. Hutong serves a very well regarded Peking Duck and has an open theatre-style kitchen so you can see the chefs at work. No proper spa, we’re afraid but there is an indoor pool and the Horizon Club where you can relax in the early evening with canapes and cocktails.
