Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train

The only luxurious way to travel to Machu Picchu, a charming train journey through the mountains towards the lost citadel.

Travel on Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train

The Sacred Valley rolls by the window as you travel serenely towards Machu Picchu. This is rural Peru, inaccessible by road, filled with myths and legends. And it’s made remarkably comfortable by this Belmond train. Glamorous carriages evoke adventures from another time and the meals on board are sublime.

Location

The train travels to and from Machu Picchu pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes. This tourist town is located in a valley, 20 minutes by bus (comfortable and included) below Machu Picchu itself. Note that the train departs from Poroy and Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. Journeys to and from Cusco involve an additional two-hour journey by air-conditioned bus between Wanchaq Station and Hotel Río Sagrado in the Sacred Valley. Instead, we recommend first transferring by private car and spending at least one night at this excellent hotel. Or choosing the Poroy route. It makes the experience with Machu Picchu a lot more relaxed and the Sacred Valley is a superb destination in its own right.

Rooms

This is a daytime train experience with no accommodation.

Who is it for

Anyone visiting Machu Picchu, including children. There is no direct road access to Machu Picchu. You can reach the world wonder via a multi-day hike, a convoluted 12-hour road journey, the standard train, or the high-end Hiram Bingham train. We recommend the Hiram Bingham for all our clients, except those wishing to hike the Inca Trail.

Facilities & activities

It’s a glamorous old-world train of wooden panelling and plush seating. There’s a vintage bar car, an observation car with panoramic windows, and a restaurant car serving a beautiful lunch (on route to Machu Picchu) or dinner (return journey). Note that it’s not necessary to travel out and back on the same day. We recommend spending the night at Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel at Machu Picchu itself, to give yourself an extra 24 hours at this wonder of the world.
