Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train

A glamorous old-world train journey, three nights meandering through the best of Malaysia like a traveller of old. It’s our favourite travel experience in Malaysia and a very relaxed way to discover the country.

Experience Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train

This is not only an experience for train lovers! It’s an opportunity to explore remote and intriguing parts of Malaysia, while enjoying a classical and charming train experience, similar to the more famous Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (both trains are operated by Belmond).

Location

The three-night itineraries depart from and return to Singapore. Most of the journey is spent in Malaysia, including in national parks, through old towns and onto the coast. Off-train excursions are included in the itinerary.

Rooms

All cabins have en-suite bathrooms with a shower and they are larger than those on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, although with a similar vintage 1920s feel. Cabins have seating areas which are converted to beds at nighttime. Pullman Cabins have a bunk bed style while State Cabins have two single beds. Presidential Suites are significantly larger and have some entertainment space.

Who is it for

This is the finest way for couples to discover Malaysia. It’s slow travel, extremely relaxing and a great addition to a multi-country itinerary in Asia. The Eastern & Oriental Express is a very unique way to explore and is well worth three nights, regardless of whether you’ve been on a train like the Orient Express before. Although children can travel on the train they can’t visit the bar and restaurant carriages, plus families would need to book extra cabins. Plus the atmosphere is very grown up.

Facilities & activities

This is no ordinary train. There’s a Dior Spa on board. The bar carriage is an ode to yesteryear travel glamour and the two restaurants are outstanding, led by André Chiang, the only Chinese chef to feature in both the World’s 50 Best Restaurants and Michelin Guide. Off-train excursions nicely break the journey and give opportunities to explore Malaysia in more depth. But the real highlight is the railway itself, as it gives a window onto the authentic and beautiful parts of Malaysia that most visitors never see.
