Schweizerhof Bern & Spa

The best hotel in Bern, a grand dame which looks very posh but is very welcoming and unpretentious. We love the spa, suites and rooftop bar. If you’re visiting the Swiss capital, this is where you should stay.

Stay at Schweizerhof

Amid stone arcades and medieval rooftops you stand before the golden facade of Hotel Schweizerhof. It’s imperious and imposing, shining with some 160 years of history. Yet as you step inside the mood is low-key and boutique, the interiors modern and the service unpretentious. You spot historical details of course, like the Murano glass installations, but you settle into a grand dame hotel that has moved with the times. So now, get yourself comfortable in your suave suite with its marble bathroom and Japanese bathtub. Relax in the only spa in Bern’s city centre. Grab a drink on the rooftop. And wonder why you would stay anywhere else in the Swiss capital.

Location

On Bahnhofplatz, the absolute centre of Bern, just across from the train station. Head to the rooftop terrace and the 360-degree view reveals just how central you are. Bern’s famous stone arcades, the medieval old town and Swiss parliament building are all immediately besides you. Now look to the horizon for a view onto the Alps.

Rooms

Charcoal, beige, red, tweed, velvet and chrome, plus grey marble in the bathroom. It’s a modern mix of design elements that reflect the contemporary style on offer. This may be a grand dame but it feels fresh and up to date, especially the vast bathrooms. We can make sure you get one of the few rooms with secret stone alcove balconies. They’re like something from Romeo & Juliet, although they actually featured on screen in James Bond’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Who is it for

Anybody travelling to Bern. Children are welcome and the surprisingly informal service will suit families. Up to three rooms can be connected as well.

Facilities & activities

It may only be 500 square metres but the Hotel Schweizerhof spa is the only spa in Bern’s city centre and it’s very good. You can drink on the only rooftop bar as well, plus the hotel has two of the capital’s best dining options.
