Location
Sumba island is a one-hour flight from Bali and there are daily connections. It’s a 40-minute road transfer from the airport to Cap Karoso, which occupies a wild stretch of Indian Ocean coastline. Sumba is fascinating, home to a religion that has existed since the Bronze Age, and traditional houses with 25-metre roofs that form a connection to the spirit world.
Rooms
All 47 rooms and 20 villas are rooted in traditional Sumbanese architecture, then brought into the 21st-century by owner Evguenia Ivara’s contemporary art and design concept. It’s all extremely unique, especially all the pieces from local and international artists. All the accommodations have an indoor-outdoor living style, but we much prefer the villas, for their private pools, open-air bathtubs and barbecue areas.
Who is it for
Cap Karoso is paradise for explorers. You must be prepared to step off the beaten path and trust that this owner-operated hotel will deliver in terms of service and design, despite such a remote location. If you like the highly polished aesthetic and amenities of a hotel brand like the Four Seasons, Cap Karoso probably isn’t for you. But whether coming as a couple or family, this Sumba experience is memorable and unique.

If you like beachfront resorts with the full array of amenities then this isn’t for you. A quiet beach and lots of space are the highlights. And this isn’t a resort to spend 24 hours a day.
