The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland

Iceland’s most famous hotel is a lunar-like spa oasis, the quintessence of Iceland’s luxury holiday offering. It’s the perfect final stop on an Iceland holiday for couples, although not ideal for young children.

Stay at The Retreat at Blue Lagoon

Stay at The Retreat and you have a private area of the famous Blue Lagoon

This is haven powered entirely by geothermal sources. For atmospheric charm it stands unrivalled, the wild surroundings balanced by opulent interiors and clean lines. Spend your mornings blissfully disconnected, with breakfast in the underground spa. Then, bathe in the mineral-rich waters of the lagoon above ground, enjoying perfect pools of turquoise not open to the general public. Delectable dining ends the day, beneath the sudden glimmer of the Northern Lights.

Location

Just 20 minutes from Keflavik International Airport, perfect for your last couple of nights on holiday. The Retreat sits on the edge of the Blue Lagoon in UNESCO-protected Grindavik, an 800-year-old lava field. Blue Lagoon is Iceland’s most famous spa and is a mass tourism destination, the waters filled with day trippers from Reykjavik. The Retreat has its own Retreat Lagoon and some private coves, delivering an important exclusivity for your spa experience.

Rooms

The retreat comprises 62 suites, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and views that vary between hardened lava, moss-coated rocks and the blue of the lagoon. We love the Lagoon Suite, with its private mineral-rich Blue Lagoon pool.

Who is it for

While all ages are welcome, there’s not much to entertain young kids. Children under 12 can’t stay in suites with direct water access either. We prefer it for couples. It’s a bucket-list hotel destination for spa lovers.

Facilities & activities

On-site restaurant Moss is always a lovely affair, combining volcanic-style fireplaces, Icelandic tasting menus and a dazzling array of wine. However, the true treat is easily the encircling lagoon and underground spa. A lava-walled steam room, Silica salt rubs and an exclusive spa eatery are just some of the wellness highlights extended here. If you don’t have a Lagoon Suite, book some time in the Lava Cove, a hidden spa within the spa.
