Takanawa Hanakohro

This hotel-within-a-hotel is highly traditional, offering an exclusive experience into Tokyo’s ancient past. Lovers of cultural history will especially adore the vibe.

Stay at Takanawa Hanakohro

Housed in a district once home to the royal family, Takanawa Hanakohro is luxuriously subdued. The grounds still contain remnants of old imperial residences. Within the bijou ryokan, ancestral charms and heritage set the mood. The scent of ikebana flowers adorn your morning, as you enjoy an in-room breakfast feast. Shortly after, it’s time for a sensual tea ceremony, surrounded by vibrant gardens and kimono-wearing hosts. Learn more about this centuries-old ritual, before gaining an inside look at the art of origami. Sake tastings commence evening activities, served beside flavourful local fare.

Location

Tucked within the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa, this intimate ryokan is as immersive as can be. Location-wise, it’s not right in the city centre, however Shinagawa Station is conveniently closeby and connected to high-speed Shinkansen trains.

Rooms

Just 16 suites occupy the property. All are traditional tatami rooms, complete with mat floors, low beds, tea sets and screens. Bathrooms are equally authentic, with treats such as Japanese bath tablets and stone-tile tubs.

Who is it for

The overall mood here is grown-up, therefore we recommend it to couples and small groups. Families should consider the neighbouring Grand Prince outpost.

Facilities & activities

Alongside the OH-SAI Lounge, a space solely reserved for guests of the boutique, one has access to the lavish Spa Tayuta, the Japanese Garden and several pools. Six delectable dining venues also feature across the whole establishment.
