Sankara Yakushima

A cosy base from which to explore Yakushima, with welcoming staff and elegant interiors. The charm is partly in the location, so don’t expect ultra-luxury. Also, it may not be the type of place you keep returning to, but well worth a stay if you’re passing by.

Stay at Sankara Yakushima

Discover an island hideaway at one with the seasons, where homely quarters leave nature centrestage. This is a place to retreat from all urban distractions. Amid the untouched heritage of Yakushima, expect to find fresh joy for the soul.First order of business upon arrival? It’s to consult the butler about your stay. Share all interests, preferences and points of fondness, letting the staff and setting handle the rest. Slow mornings proffer magic, as you roam ancient rainforests. Spa treatments and outdoor dips alleviate all fatigue. Wine and dine before a sea-facing sunset later, watching the flavours of heaven, earth and water combine.

Location

The island-based resort is located off the south coast of Kyushu. To get to Yakushima, you can take a direct flight from Osaka or Fukuoka. Alternatively, it’s a four-hour ferry from Kagoshima, or two hours if you opt to travel by hydrofoil.

Rooms

Only 24 guest rooms comprise the boutique. They take shape as refined, villa-style stays, with modern Asian style and a rich wood theme. If you seek the best money can buy, then we recommend the Sankara Suite, complete with its own spa room and outdoor bath.

Who is it for

This bijou estate is chic and sophisticated, and as such, it is more suited to twosomes than those with young kids. The facilities, too, are rather adult-orientated.

Facilities & activities

Residents have two restaurants, a spa and compact gym room to utilise, as well as a 24-hour library lounge with over 600 books. There’s also an outdoor pool adorned with ocean views, whilst ecological activities celebrate nature.
