Kempinski Berchtesgaden

Spectacularly perched in the Bavarian Alps, this is the best luxury hotel in the Berchtesgaden area. A nice option for a long active weekend away, with tons of things to do in the surrounding mountains.

Stay at Kempinski Berchtesgaden

Indulge on the views, get active in the mountains, and explore the many things to do within an hour of Kempinski Berchtesgaden. Formerly an Intercontinental property, this large mountain hotel is made for active holidays, especially in the summer. It’s also well situated for a layover on route to the Italian Dolomites.

Location

As beautiful a location as any hotel in Germany and perfect if you’re with your own vehicle. Within 30 minutes of the hotel you can visit Salzburg, Red Bull Hangar 7 and stunning lakes like Konigsee. Hitler’s famous mountaintop Eagle’s Nest is visible from the hotel pool and you can easily visit, although it’s a huge tourist trap. We prefer some of the hiking, biking and historical tours you can do in the immediate area: this Obersalzberg area is notorious for Nazis and the hotel is built where Goring had his house.

Rooms

We recommend the Terrace Rooms and Deluxe Terrace Rooms on the highest floor, which have the best views and a nice terrace for summer evenings. Spread across two floors, the Maisonette Suite is a good choice for families.

Who is it for

This hotel is best for active holidays, as a couple, family or with friends. It’s a good choice if you don’t mind the hotel’s large size and slightly corporate feel. For more intimate and romantic stays in the Alps we can advise you personally.

Facilities & activities

This is a deceptively large hotel with dedicated spaces for events and teambuilding activities. Dining is a standout, with Michelin-starred restaurant PUR and two more casual options. Berchtesgaden town has nice eateries too. On our last visit there was a large group staying in the hotel as part of a Porsche driving itinerary. Overall the facilities could be better though. The gym is poor, the spa is okay for a visit, but many properties in the Italian Dolomites are significantly better.
