Hoshinoya Tokyo

Tokyo’s original five-star ryokan inn, complete with tatami mat flooring and lots of local craftsmanship. If you want an immersion in traditional Japanese hospitality and style then this is your place to stay in the capital.

Stay at Hoshinoya Tokyo

Remove your shoes upon entering this tower next to Tokyo Station. Ascend in an elevator with tatami floors. Lounge on low sofas and eat onigiri rice balls. Each of the hotel’s 14 floors is designed as its own ryokan, with six minimalist rooms and an incredibly serene atmosphere. Hoshinoya Tokyo provides a very traditional Japanese experience, in a very central Tokyo location. It’s completely different to the city’s other top hotels and a great choice for the curious.

Location

Standing between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace in the busiest and fastest-paced part of central Tokyo. A location which makes the tranquillity within even more remarkable. While the immediate surroundings are mostly a business and financial district, the location affords convenient access to anywhere in the city.

Rooms

A contemporary take on the Japanese ryokan style and aesthetics (the hotel was newly built and opened in 2016). Think tatami mats, sliding washi screens, low chairs and futons. It’s not a style you would find anywhere except Japan. Rooms in ryokans are deliberately minimalist but some may find them too small for their tastes. In this case we recommend the Kiku corner rooms, which are double the size and are actually suites, with a nice living area.

Who is it for

This is a specific property. If you want lots of facilities and western-styled comforts then it’s not for you. Hoshinoya Tokyo is a purely Japanese experience and will delight culture seekers, or anyone seeking a fresh hotel experience. Families are welcome too and it’s actually a nice choice for families who want to have a ryokan experience, as it’s more modern in style compared with traditional ryokans in the countryside.

Facilities & activities

Expect obsequious Japanese service and lots of tea to drink. The hotel facilities are only for in-house guests, including a Japanese restaurant which provides an amazing and highly traditional experience, in the comfort of your hotel. Onsen baths on the 17th floor are split into men’s and women’s sections - as is custom in Japan - while the small spa has good treatments.
