Sri Lanka’s premier beach property. Defined by space and privacy, with a spectacular Indian Ocean location and Aman’s chic style.
Stay at Amanwella
Barefoot luxury and Aman minimalism, on a wild beach in southern Sri Lanka. Amanwella can be a beachfront base for doing different excursions along the south coast, to ancient temples, tea plantations of wildlife. Or it’s a place to unwind on the beach and enjoy the sunsets, as part of a longer Sri Lanka itinerary.
Location
In a country known for its amazing beaches, Amanwella has a very privileged location. It’s on the south coast, about three hours from Colombo by road, the last stretch being a winding track through lush jungle. Great boulders and palm trees shelter the long golden beach, which has an untouched, natural feel. The ocean can be quite rough so swimming here isn’t for everyone.
Rooms
The 30 freestanding suites are essentially private villas, all with their own plunge pools. Aman’s minimalist design fits nicely here, the clean design helping to maximise the glorious surroundings. Suites vary by view and we’d skip the Garden Pool Suite in favour of the more premium options which afford much better ocean views.
Who is it for
Naturally a good choice for couples, thanks to the seclusion and style. But surprisingly good for families too. There are three pairs of interconnecting suites and a variety of dedicated kids activities.
Facilities & activities
There’s a lot to do close to the resort, from whale watching, surfing and snorkelling, to temples, caves and wildlife safaris inland. You can catch your own dinner with local fishermen, come face to face with elephants, or smell the incense inside ancient temples. Nice Ayurvedic treatments help further with relaxation but note there’s no actual spa, with treatments in your suite or on the beach. There’s a Beach Club for dining with toes in the sand, a main restaurant with Mediterranean, Sri Lankan and pan-Asian cuisine, plus plenty of private dining spots around the property.
