Ceylon Tea Trails

Magnificent. Sri Lanka’s first ever Relais & Chateaux property is a gorgeous tea plantation retreat that epitomises relaxed adventure. A few days here is an iconic and almost essential part of a Sri Lanka holiday.

Stay at Ceylon Tea Trails

Disconnection is the vibe at Ceylon Tea Trails. It’s a stunning property that sprawls across emerald hills, owned and operated by the family behind Dilmah Tea. Colonial-era bungalows have been restored and they provide exceptional views, comfort and serenity. The prospect of soft adventure is everywhere, from villages to hikes, learning about tea and much more. And this beautiful property embodies the very best of Sri Lankan hospitality and gastronomy.

Location

In Sri Lanka’s Golden Valley of tea, about two hours by road from Kandy and the country’s highest town, Nuwara Eliya. It’s best to arrive by seaplane, usually from Colombo. The seaplane touches down on Castlereagh Lake, literally outside your bungalow. You can continue to other destinations by seaplane or potentially by road.

Who is it for

Ceylon Tea Trails is almost an unmissable stop on any Sri Lankan itinerary. There’s more than enough space for couples and families to relax in peace and privacy. The vibe can feel quite grown up and it seems like a couple’s retreat, but there are lots of activities for children.

Rooms

Rooms and suites are located in five bungalows spread across the property, all honouring the property’s plantation heritage. It’s a vintage style, complete with four-poster bed, that’s extremely well done and not dated. All accommodations come with butler service and each bungalow has a great infinity pool. Skip the rooms and take a Garden Suite, the advantage being the beautiful private garden. Master Suites provide more interior space, although this property is more about the grounds than an oversized suite. The Owner’s Cottage is the largest, a detached bungalow with a jacuzzi in the garden.

Facilities & activities

Drink fresh tea, take breakfast on your verandah, savour the views, appreciate the silence and simply disconnect. That’s a big part of any stay. The menu of adventures is long though, whether hiking, biking, cooking, learning all about tea and exploring this splendid region. As Sri Lanka’s first ever Relais & Chateaux property there’s a big emphasis on the gastronomy, which is worth the journey alone. As is the warm Sri Lankan hospitality too.
