Amanemu

Inspired by the simplicity of classic Japanese ryokans, this intimate and private property provides the zen-inducing atmosphere that couples often crave. It’s a destination hotel for lovers of slow travel.

Stay at Amanemu

We love the opportunity to explore a less-seen part of Japan, while wrapped in the exclusivity and opulence of this Aman property. Set atop a quiet hilltop, this minimalist Aman estate lets nature do the talking. Forested slopes and scenic golf courses surround you. Sea views stretch to the azure of Ago Bay. Meanwhile, pavilion-style structures and courtyards spread around the property, all built around the healing steam of natural hot springs. By day, tour the delights of the local area, known for its seafood, its pearl farms and the iconic Ise Shrine. Grab bikes and explore nearby woodlands, before returning to the resort for an outdoor soak.

Location

Nestled within the folds of Ise-Shima National Park in Mie Prefecture, Amanemu is off the typical tourist path. It’s a three-hour train journey from Kyoto, or four hours from Tokyo. Alternatively, you can go by helicopter from Nagoya.

Rooms

Just 30 suites call this hilltop hideaway home. All are spacious and modern, with large windows and hinoki cypress wood walls. Stays lead out to serene decks with lavish daybeds, while deep, basalt stone baths occupy bathrooms within.

Who is it for

We recommend this place to adults who revel in slow travel and exploring less touristic places. Families with children are also welcome, however the grown-up feel isn’t the most exciting vibe for kids. It’s a very private place, the sort that honeymooners would gravitate towards.

Facilities & activities

Excellent. There’s a bay-facing infinity pool, two sunken terraces with fires, a library and an extravagant spa. The latter also hosts a gym, yoga studio, watsu therapy pool and outdoor onsen bathing. Finally, there’s a Bar and Lounge and main restaurant serving seasonal local fare. Service is refined and it’s easy to go out exploring the area, with or without a guide.
