Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto

Deep in traditional Kyoto, inside the historic Mitsui family residence, this is a surprisingly sleek and contemporary hotel that finds the balance between old and new. A strong design-forward option in a city with many strong hotel options.

Stay at The Mitsui Kyoto

Walking through the 18th-century Kajimiya Gate you can feel the power of the past. Yet this Luxury Collection Hotel hints at Kyoto’s future, as superstar designer André Fu created something different to the city’s traditional design style. It’s a bold hotel bubbling with character, wrapped around a sublime garden, with its own natural onsen in the heart of Kyoto.

Location

Opposite Nijo Castle, inside the ancient residence of the Mitsui family, one of Japan’s most powerful clans. It’s a very privileged location, as you’re encased by castle-like walls and bamboo, have natural hot springs on site, yet are also very central.

Rooms

We really like the design. It’s modern, minimalist and super stylish, without being a Japanese cliche. Suites are particularly nice and spa lovers should consider one of the two Onsen Suites. However, with 160 rooms and suites this is a large hotel and it can feel busy at times.

Who is it for

The vibe is refined and initially seems very grown up, but overall this is one of the better family options in Kyoto thanks to the large grounds and thoughtful touches for kids. It’s a good all-round option that’s best for people with an interest in design. Also a nice option if the rest of your Japan trip sticks to more traditionally-styled hotels.

Facilities & activities

Step into the fresh air and it’s like you’re exploring, just by wandering around and relaxing in the hotel grounds. The natural, thermal spring spa is an absolute delight too, another strong reason to choose Hotel the Mitsui over Kyoto’s other great options. Afternoon Tea in the Garden Bar is a must when you’re staying here while the restaurants offer Japanese-French and continental cuisine.
