This is by far the best hotel across the island, and the only true five-star property. We recommend staying for a few nights, before venturing onwards to the likes of St Barths, Anguilla and so forth - all easy boat transfers.
Stay at Belmond La Samanna
Deliciously isolated atop tropical clifftops, the views from La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel are rather hypnotic. Ahead, the powdery sands of Baie Longue stretch. Inland, white residence blocks topped with terracotta tiles rise elegantly.Vibrant gardens and winding paths are the backdrop to your stay. Day by day, they lead to various treasures. Spot exotic iguanas as you meander through the grounds in the morning. Notice the scent of native fauna on your way to a massage. Caribbean-French culinary treats reveal themselves, come evening. Tonight, a candlelit tasting in the wine cellar awaits.
Location
Sat on the west coast of this topsy-turvy island, La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel boasts wonderful seclusion. Though this privacy is appealing, note shops and restaurants aren’t exactly walkable. Bustling Simpson Bay on the Dutch side is a 15-minute drive, as is the airport.
Rooms
The property comprises 83 abodes, named after flowers and dressed in a theme of pastel chic. Suites offer beachfront location, plunge pools and rooftop porches. Finally, eight bird-labelled cliff-set villas also feature, with up to four bedrooms and personal infinity pools.
Who is it for
It goes without saying, the remoteness here is ideal for couples and honeymooners. However, though there is no kids club or play area, the resort still caters well to families and multi-generation escapes.
Facilities & activities
Guests are spoiled with a beautiful beach, two pools, three tennis courts and four oceanfront cabanas. There’s also a zen-inducing spa, gym, yoga studio, trio of boutiques and gallery, where Impressionist artist Sir Roland Richardson may himself be. In the way of F&B, expect three distinct eateries, a scenic bar and ambient wine cellar.
