Sri Lanka has battled some much-publicised challenges in the last 20 years, but is finally receiving the recognition it deserves as a high-end destination. From tea plantations to beaches, leopards to mountains, it’s a country of endless visual superlatives. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is calm and safe, and the people are welcoming. How nice is it to visit a country where the local really want you to visit? And there are so many discoveries to make, far from crowds and the same over-Instagrammed places?
Getting here and around
Emirates and Qatar have multiple daily flights to Colombo. Swiss and Turkish are among the other airlines flying here daily. Sri Lanka can also make an easy combination with nearby Maldives, via a 1.5-hour flight, so perhaps you do a week of new exploration followed by a week at a private island resort. Sri Lanka is small. It’s easy and fast to connect most destinations with seaplane or helicopter. Road journeys are a beautiful adventure too, then there are some vintage train journeys which will be a great experience for some traveller.
Climate & seasons
Traditionally, Sri Lanka has been a winter destination, with the driest weather between late December and April. During these months you can comfortably visit anywhere in the country. Two different monsoons impact opposite sides of the country later in the year, when Sri Lanka can still be a good destination, depending on where you go. Much like nearby Maldives, the changing climate is creating good opportunities for travel in what were once considered the off-season months. September, October and April are all great times to visit.
Where to go
Sri Lanka is amazingly diverse. Colombo and Galle provide the old city experiences, while tea plantations and mountains dominate the centre and north. There are fantastic beaches across the country, most notably in the south and east. And then there is all the wildlife in national parks like Yala. Sri Lanka’s best accommodation is boutique and exclusive, mostly in spectacular non-urban settings. They are sprawling properties with an emphasis on privacy and experiences. Owner-operated Ceylon Tea Trails have three excellent properties, the only Relais & Chateaux properties in the country, on a tea plantation, the beach and safari area. Aman has a secluded beach resort and we also know some small, high-end stays that are both comfortable and experiential for short stays.
What to do
It’s incredible how many different things you can do during only ten days in Sri Lanka. Go on safari with elephants and leopards. Relax and hike in the tea-covered mountains. Discover some spectacular and very much untouched beaches. There’s a lot of culture for those who seek it, plus Buddhist temples, ancient ruins and really good local cuisine. Sri Lanka is a relaxed adventure, ideal if you want a calm touring holiday with one highly memorable and new experience each day.
