Avenues of temples and corinthian columns. Marketplaces alive in Roman grandeur. Bedouin musicians playing the drums in an old amphitheatre. Welcome to the most impressive ancient Roman city of all.
Unlike Rome, where the old mixes with the new, Jerash is an abandoned city, frozen in the time of emperors from 200AD. It’s an enormous place, with hundreds of columns and various temples. You need at least two hours just to walk around the old cobblestone streets. So much history is narrated by your guide, as you discover how columns were built to withstand earthquakes, and the glory days of this clearly prosperous city.
This is a great day trip from Amman or the Dead Sea and can be combined with other sights in northern Jordan, such as Ajloun Castle. If you love Roman history, there are two other smaller abandoned cities to explore nearby as well.
