Baby elephants use their trunks as snorkels. Hippos grunt and barge, then pause to meet your eyes. Partially hidden by reeds, a lion pride takes a quiet afternoon drink.
Wildlife is different on the water. Safari is different on the water. Cruise along the riverbanks and you can get exceptionally close to big animals. Sometimes you must detour away from all the hippos. Every animal must drink so as you cruise it can feel like the safari is coming to you.
The Okavango Delta is the best place in Africa for a boat safari. A motorboat is more comfortable than a mokoro canoe so you can spend a whole day doing this, although usually it’s more like a game drive on water, for 2 – 3 hours in the morning or afternoon.
With a boat you’ll gain a fresh perspective on the animal world. And when the engine is turned off and you glide past a herd of elephants, you’ll feel an immense connection with that world.
