Akagera Big-Game Safari

Hippos grunt as you cruise past them on a small boat. Baby elephants swing their trunks gleefully, as their protective mother towers over your safari vehicle. On a walking safari you encounter some unusual antelope. During the night a lion roars.

It sounds like Africa, but isn’t Rwanda home to the gorillas? Akagera is the great African conservation story. This wilderness was destroyed by the fallout from the 1994 genocide. But wildlife has been reintroduced and we love the behind the scenes conservation safaris with park rangers.

It’s not on the level of the Serengeti or Masai Mara. But it’s a very good first-time safari destination, because there are many different species and activities in an easy to explore area.
